'Winter's Garden' by Cassandra Connolly

The concept for 'Winter's Garden' came from my love of personifying the seasons. I find the idea that the seasons have distinct personalities and that these traits can be emulated throughout my designs to reflect this really exciting. To me, 'Winter' is elegant, sophisticated and magical. While the winter season isn't abundant with flowers and floral inspiration like spring and summer or full of the rich tones of autumn, the elements of winter are harder to spot. But once you do start to notice these glimmers, you are richly rewarded. Opulent, jewelled berries, frosted leaves and branches covered in fairy dust all contributed to the beautiful landscape of winter, which is reflected in her personality.

This landscape, or Winter's garden as I like to think of it feels intentional. I like to imagine that 'Winter' chooses the elements she adorns her space with precision. Each botanical, leaf and branch placed where she has put it is placed by design to create a peaceful, thoughtful garden.

Winter’s garden, silent and bare,

Holds secrets in the frosty air.

Against the silver, grey and white,

Shining through the low sunlight,

She hides her treasures in plain sight,

Fool’s gold glittering in the light.

Opulent jewels of crimson red and orange rust,

Covered in sparkling fairy dust.

Mistletoe charms as magic weaves,

Through evergreen and frosted leaves.

A silent rustle through the trees,

Frozen limbs deterring mischievous thieves.

A soundless promise that no one shall pass,

As the world turns pearlescent, through frosted glass.

Quiet beauty, almost divine,

Everything placed here by design.

Here subtle hues of green intertwine,

Winter berries peeking through the vines.

And from the peaceful, frozen ground,

New life and blooms will soon be found.

Winter’s garden, serene and fair,

Whispers promises to the frosty air.

Each collection has it's hero print and this one is no exception. I wanted 'Winter's Promise' to encapsulate the feeling and imagery which my poem evokes. All of the patterns in this collection are tossed prints, which is intentional, as I wanted each design to have a graceful flow to it. This print focuses on Hellebores (or Winter Roses as they are commonly known.) One of the few plants which bloom in winter, this delicate bloom sits beautifully in contrast with some of the other botanical elements in the design. This is the only print in this collection to feature a floral as I wanted to focus on all of the other beautiful elements which can be found in this season. The detailing on the Hellebore's and some selected berries feature pearlescence to add a magical sparkle. This design comes in three colourways- 'Light Silver,' 'Light Green' and 'Deep Forest Green,' to contrast or compliment any project.

'Quiet Beauty' is the secondary print in this collection. Available in 'Pale Aqua,' 'Blue Grey' and 'Charcoal,' I wanted this design to support the hero print without distracting from it. The mixture of berries, miniature pine cones and linear leaves balance out the design, with frosted pearlescent elements for a subtle shimmer.

I actually began this collection by drawing out this coordinate print. The placement of the different evergreen and fir tree sprigs in very intentional as it creates almost a swirling flow to the pattern. While I could've added pearlesent to every single leaf and branch, I chose to use it on only a couple of intermittent ones as I didn't want to distract from the design. 'Evergreen' can be found in 'White,' 'Grey' and 'Charcoal.'

The simple elegance of 'Mistletoe Charms' is one of my favourite things about this collection. I really wanted the hand drawn texture to come through on the leaves, so I made sure to colour each one in individually. Again, I didn't want to distract too much by using the pearlescence too heavily, so I chose small clusters of berries to highlight amidst the other white berries. You can find 'Mistletoe Charms' in 'Light Silver,' 'Light Green' and 'Deep Forest Green.'

The final design of my collection is 'Winter's Berry' my magical blender. The colours of these designs 'Pale Aqua,' 'Grey' and 'Blue Grey' remind me of a winter landscape. The slender sprigs feel elegant, while the speckled pearlescence feels like frost or fairy dust.

In addition to my five designs in three colourways, I also designed a binding stripe to compliment this collection. This has so much potential, from binding quilts, to bags and smaller projects such as coasters and table runners, this is a great addition to your stash. I can't wait to see what you do with this, it really is so much fun!
