I had a little Sunday sort out and discovered some 9 patch quilt blocks which I had made a while ago, using 'The Water Gardens' fabrics which I designed for Lewis and Irene in 2024. It was so nice to have a little play with them as I'd forgotten how versatile they are. I love how the design changes completely depending where you place your light and dark fabrics. They create the prettiest optical illusions and when used in a quilt can be quite striking.

A 9 patch square is a traditional quilting block, consisting of nine equal sized smaller squares which are arranged in a 3x3 grid. The best 9 patch blocks have two very contrasting colours/ designs of fabric to define the pattern of the block. Due to its simplicity and versatility this is a popular quilting block design. Some basic variations, consist of cutting the block once constructed and rearranging the pieces to create a more intricate look.

While this might be a beginners block, your fabric choices can make this feel anything but. Some of my favourite combinations were created using the darker charcoals and navy's against the paler creams, taupe's and light blues. Smaller squares will create a busier feeling quilt, whereas larger squares will showcase more of the fabrics in each block.

As with any quilt block, if you are using directional fabrics, it is important to keep an eye on which way they are facing. As you are working in squares it is really noticeable if the designs are facing different directions and this can become distracting, which is not what you want when you have spent a lot of time and love working on a gorgeous quilt top.

These quilt blocks work really well in so many projects. From quilts to cushions and table runners, these really are a go-to block to create a quick, striking design. Now with so many possibilities, I can't wait to see what these turn into.
