My 'Meadowside' collection was designed to have a classic, romantic feel so I wanted to find a children's dress pattern which also demonstrated these qualities. These classic A-line dresses were a perfect match, especially as they work well with larger prints due to their simplicity which show cases the designs without distraction.
There are three different variations of the children's slip dress to make. We chose to make A and C in a size six year old as we wanted to show a dress with sleeves and without sleeves. For dress A we used 'Bird by Bird in Deep Plum' and for dress C we used 'Small Seeds in Mustard Yellow'. The only notions required are some elastic and a button which was fantastic as we wanted a quick and easy project which didn't require any fiddly zips.
Perfect for a beginner dress maker, depending on your fabric there will be pattern matching required which is something to bear in mind. If you aren't a fan of pattern matching I would be wary of directional prints as the back of the dresses does require quite precise matching. This does however, if done properly, create a stunning visual effect. A statement button can be added for a pop of colour. Not having a zip also makes the dresses easy to take on and off, which is great for children.
Uncomplicated and easily customisable. these dresses are quick, easy and can be made up in an afternoon. I would recommend checking the measurements of the child you are making this for as they were slightly baggy on my six year old. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as it allows room for them to play and doesn't restrict movement, making them lovely day dresses, but I think a slightly more fitted bodice would've made for a better design.
With the addition of the sleeves in design A this dress automatically has an autumnal feel to it. Dress C could easily be layered with warm tights, a long sleeved top and a cardigan to transform it into a versatile outfit for colder weather. Using the slightly heavier weight quilting cottons from my 'Meadowside' collection means the designs have a lovely drape without feeling too flimsy, something which I think is integral for children's clothing.
Overall I think this is a lovely dress pattern. The versatility of the design makes it perfect for children and I would love to experiment further with different fabric designs in the future as this is a dress which lends itself well to showcasing beautiful fabric. For speed and ease I would recommend this dress but definitely don't scrimp on measuring the wearer.
