McCall's M6016 Shirt Pattern Review

With 'Arctic Adventure' being such a playful collection, I wanted to make something that was a bit different compared to the usual dresses we create to showcase my designs. While browsing through dress patterns, I came across McCall's M6016 infant shirt pattern and knew we could have some fun with these fabrics.

We chose to make two variations of 'version B' in the Extra-Large size using fabrics from my 'Arctic Adventure' collection- 'Polar Delight on Cool Slate Grey' and 'True North on Cool Purple Grey.' For both shirts we decided not to create button holes, but to make it easier for little fingers we replaced these with poppers. On the 'Polar Delight on Cool Slate Grey' shirt we added ornamental buttons on top of the poppers to give the illusion of buttons. On the other shirt we just used poppers and left the exterior plain which created a lovely simple look.

This pattern makes an adorable shirt that fits really well, although my son is slightly small for his age. Easily made up in an afternoon, the pattern was easy to read and came together quickly. All instructions were explained easily and none of the additional elements such as the pocket were difficult to incorporate. On the True North shirt, we chose to leave the pocket off the design to showcase the fabric as the print is slightly larger than the Polar Delight design. The pocket on this shirt however is so sweet and really adds to the charm of this shirt.

These shirts are really versatile. The simplicity of the designs makes them really sweet everyday wear, however due to the nature of them being shirts, they make fantastic occasion wear too, especially teamed with a pair of chinos.

We've had so much fun making these and can't wait to experiment with the rest of the range. I can't wait to play with different combinations to see what we can come up with. The pattern is very versatile and I would love to see a contrasting pocket and or collar in future variations. My son absolutely adored these shirts and it has been hard to get him to take them off. Due to the simplicity of the pattern design, they really feel like classic, timeless heirloom pieces which I would love to see them passed down to future generations. I would highly recommend this pattern and hope you have as much fun choosing the fabrics as I did!
