Free Heart Shaped Lavender Bags Pattern

Floral Song Lavender Bags by Cassandra Connolly

When I'm not drawing, painting or designing, one of my favourite things to do in my spare time is to sew. With lots of left over scraps from various projects, I came up with these pretty lavender bags to use up the pieces of fabric which were just too lovely to throw away.

These lavender bags come in two different sizes, the smallest finished size being approximately 7.5cm and the largest finished size being approximately 10.5cm. To make these bags yourself all you need is some fabric scraps (bigger than the above measurements,) some thread, a needle, scissors, your sewing machine and of course some lovely dried lavender. To make it easy for you, I've even created a printable template which you can download below. Each template has a cutting line (the solid black line) and a sewing line (the dashed line.) If you didn't want to draw the sewing line on your fabric, you can just use a quarter inch seam guide or foot on your sewing machine for the same result.

To begin, click the download button below and download your template. Choose which size heart shape you would like to make and cut it out. Taking two pieces of fabric, draw around the template on the wrong side of each fabric so that you have two pieces of fabric with hearts drawn on the wrong side. Cut these heart shapes out from your fabric using fabric scissors. If you wish to draw around the stitch line as a guide you can cut your paper template smaller (around the dashed line) and place in the centre of your fabric heart shape you have drawn. Again draw around this on the wrong side of your fabric so you can use this as a guide. You only need to do this on one fabric heart as you won't see the other side on the sewing machine.

Now take both of your fabric hearts and place them with the right side of the fabric facing each other on top of one another. If you wish to pin them in place you can. Placing the fabric with the stitch line you drew as a guide on top sew around your stitch line (or use your quarter inch seam guide on your sewing machine.) When sewing make sure you leave a hole approximately 2-3cm so that you can turn the hearts the right way out to fill them.

When you have finished sewing your hearts, take a pair of fabric scissors and taking care not to cut your stitches, snip a couple of millimetres into the fabric in 0.5cm increments around the heart. This will allow the fabric to curve and sit nicely to create a smooth heart shape when filled. Once completed, pull the fabric through the 3cm hole you left to turn the fabric right side out. Iron your heart and fill with gorgeous scented lavender. Once the bag is as full as your wish, carefully invisible stitch your gap together and voila you have a lovely scented lavender bag which you can use as a treat for yourself or a gift for a friend.
